Subaru WRX Design

The generational change of the Subaru WRX is approaching. We've already seen the STI EJ20 Final Edition, which marks a farewell not only to the motor mentioned in its name but also to the current model as a whole. The next sports car should go on sale around fall 2021, and while the exact premiere date is not yet known, we can imagine what the novelty will look like.

Motor1 designer created these renders based on the look of Levorg station wagon, the second generation of which was declassified the week before last. Presumably, the sedan will borrow the design of the front part with a slightly larger grille and new headlights, but in general, it won't differ much from its predecessor. And, of course, since it's a WRX, it will have a ventilated hood and a big antifender.

According to rumours, Subaru WRX will be transferred to the new platform developed together with Toyota. "Toyota will help with the new all-wheel-drive system, based on technologies of rally Yaris. But the engine will be own - 2,4-liter turbocharged opposition, which is already used in the models Ascent, Legacy, and Outback. Insiders promised that it will be boosted up to 400 hp, but probably the "charged" WRX STI will have such impact, not usual WRX. Details will become clear closer to the premiere, which is still at least six months away.

In July, Subaru announced updated sedans WRX and WRX STI for Russia, which, together with the restyling, received improved noise isolation and upgraded steering. Subaru WRX equipped with a two-litre turbo-positive 268 horsepower, which works in tandem with a six-speed manual transmission or a variator. Sedan WRX STI is equipped with a 2,5-liter capacity unit of 300 hp, working only with a "manual. And the most remarkable thing in this whole story is that the incredible efficiency has not made the STI refined, boring and similar to a computer simulator. It is alive, it is fascinating! At least, because there is an old-school power steering, which will give a hundred points ahead even to the best electric systems according to information ability, no matter what to say. Including the one used on the BRZ.

Old-school is also about the engine and transmission. Under a cowl, for example, the familiar 2,5-liter EJ series opposition engine works. Why? Because of the new turbo engine FA20, which WRX and Forester got until they can't "inflate" up to 300 horsepower, there would be no questions about service life and heat exchange. And it's OK - the "old guy" didn't become worse sounding, and with the new firmware of "brains" the back of his head hits the headrest with a swing already at about 2600 rpm instead of 3000 in the previous car. And who cares that the archaic system of distributed injection is still here?

In an ideal Subaru world - perhaps, nothing. According to Japanese, phenomenal chassis, time-proven vicious motor, and smart full drive system should be enough to get the best "lighter" title in Golf class. But certainly, even having read all these praises about new STI, many will ask a question: my dear, but what about Golf R and S3? They also have 300 powers and all-wheel drive, but a much more humane price tag. What about CLA 45 AMG and M135i xDrive? They cost the same as the Subaru but are more powerful. Besides, each of these cars, besides a respectable brand, has a bunch of modern gadgets, the most innovative multimedia systems, cool interiors, and in the case of Mercedes - also an excellent design! So why the McRae buyer should prefer them to a spartan, brutally noisy and expensive Subaru WRX STI?

None. With such a statement of a question, I have absolutely nothing to object to. All the cars mentioned above also drive perfectly, but they offer much more pleasant options than Subaru can offer for their money. Here, having paid more than two million rubles, you don't get anything except marvellous drive. I bet the STI will beat any competitor on asphalt and will destroy the unpaved or snowy road. But it will almost certainly lose the battle for a purse, remaining a choice of the loony fans. That's the way it's always been, and that's the way it will be now. And maybe that's even a good thing.
